El Gran Parque: largest green space on the Sunshine Coast

The creation of El Gran Parque in Mijas, which is the largest space of its kind on the Costa del Sol, aims to create a unique place for leisure and outdoor activities. The construction of the park has been financed in phases, with €2 million earmarked in 2023, while the remaining funds have been split between 2024 (€14.5 million) and 2025 (€16.3 million). The total investment budget is almost €33 million.

However, El Gran Parque in Mijas is unique for entirely different reasons. It is larger than the well-known Camp Benítez in Málaga and is sure to become one of the most important and most visited green spaces in the region. It is intended not only to serve as a local attraction, but also to draw tourists visiting the Costa del Sol.

Attractions for all generations in El Gran Parque

The park’s design was the result of a participatory process, during which local residents had the opportunity to submit their suggestions. As a result, the new recreational space features:

    • a navigable lake – an attraction for water sports enthusiasts,
    • main avenue – 24 metres wide, with pedestrian and cycle traffic separation, planted with barberry trees,
    • recreational paths – routes for running, cycling and simply walking,
    • fountains – one in the shape of a star and the other of a cross – both located on the main avenue,
    • children’s playgrounds – including a water playground and a 5,000 m² space dedicated to the little ones,
    • dog park – a separate and dedicated area of 2,000 m² for them,
    • recreation areas for adults – equipped with board game tables,
    • skatepark – a modern place to ride skateboards, rollerblades or scooters,
    • an open-air amphitheatre – making use of the natural terrain and designed to host cultural events.

Where is El Gran Parque located?

The park has been created at Cortijo del Ahogadero in Las Lagunas, Mijas, around a 30-minute drive from Marbella and approximately 20 minutes from Málaga Airport. The construction of two bridges is also intended to ensure easy access to the new space. One of them will connect Avenida Andalucía with the area near the cemetery, whilst the other will provide a link to the Venta de la Morena area. The park development also includes plans for a car park with space for 1,000 vehicles.

The new park in Mijas is not only a recreational space but also a place that blends harmoniously into the landscape of the Costa del Sol. As previously announced, the design reflects a modern approach to urban planning, combining recreational, sporting and educational functions. Water management was also taken into account during its design – by selecting species of trees, plants and grasses that do not require such heavy watering. In total, the park will feature 3,000 new trees and shrubs.
